Accordion: simone zanchini (ita)

Advanced and professional level of jazz accordion will be led by Italian virtuoso Simone Zanchini. It will focus on development of improvised lines, use of rhythmic elements, and comping techniques. Improvisation on this instrument often flirts with ethnic rhythms.

The trumpet course (also designed for trombone, cornet, English horn and tuba) focuses on the fundamentals of sound, breathing, timing, technique, and improvisation. The trumpet mentor is an outstanding trumpet player, lecturer at the Jazz Music Institute of the Music Academy in Katowice, Piotr Wojtasik.

Vocal course offers learning of vocal techniques, vocal improvisation, ear training and practice techniques. It inspires vocalists to access their personal artistry as performers, using concrete exercises. Mentors also offers concepts to expand vocal technique and for improving rhythmic, harmonic and melodic abilities. The course is led by two mentors: Judy Niemack and Sheila Cooper.

The bass course (double bass, electric bass) will focus on bass lines, timing, grooves, swing feel and soloing. In addition we will also give attention to jazz theory, instrumental technique and exploring the history of Jazz-bass. The bass mentor is a very in-demand sideman, composer, bandleader and the Director of Jazz Studies at the Prince Claus Conservatory in Groningen, the Netherlands: Joris Teepe.

The percussion course will focus on learning various Latin rhythms and styles as well as fundamental concepts of groove, feel, technique on all the percussion instruments, and accompanying. The percussion mentor, who was born in Brazil, has lived in Vienna since the 90's and has played with many of the greats of jazz, latin and pop music: Luis Ribeiro.

Saxophone: andy middleton (usa)

The saxophone course (tenor, alto and soprano as well as baritone, flute, clarinet, oboe and bassoon) focuses on the fundamentals of sound, timing, technique, jazz ear training and improvisation with a focus on melody and rhythm. The saxophone mentor is an outstanding US player, improviser, composer, and professor of Jazz Composition at the Konservatorium Wien as well as the Jazzinty artistic director: Andy Middleton.

Participants in the class both compose and perform. The focus will be on original compositions that will be discussed and later played in the ensemble setting. One of the ways that students will learn how to compose will be using their pure improvisational ability that will be later transformed into a composition.
